Independence Day- September 16

One of Mexico’s largest fiestas is held on September 16. It’s the day in 1810 that Miguel Hidalgo, parish priest of Dolores, State of Guanajuato, commenced an insurrection against the Spanish that would lead to Mexico becoming independent of Spain. It’s equal to the celebration of the 4th of July in the United States.

In Bucerias every school child is in the grand parade. There are dancers, re-enactments of the battles fought and won, gymnasts, horsemen, and all the past Queens of every celebration, ages three to ninety nine.

Fireworks light up the Plaza at the end of the evening and all the participants “gritar” (put up the yell), Viva Mexico!
